.Organic Matter Mineralization with the Reduction of Ferric Iron: A Review
نویسنده
چکیده
A review of the literature indicates that numerous microorganisms can reduce ferric iron during the metabolism of organic matter. In most cases, the reduction of ferric iron appears to be enzymatically catalyzed and, in some instances. may be coupled to an electron transport chain that could generate A TP. However, the-physiology and biochem" istry of ferric irQn reduction are POQrly understood. Anaerobic Sediments
The potential for ferric iron reduction with fermentable substrates, fermentation products, and complex organic matter as electron donors was investigated with sediments from freshwater and brackish water sites in the Potomac River Estuary. In enrichments with glucose and hematite, iron reduction was a minor pathway for electron flow, and fermentation products accumulated. The substitution of a...

Stabilization of organic matter in soil is important for natural ecosystem to sequestrate carbon and mitigate greenhouse gas emission. It is largely unknown what factors govern the preservation of organic carbon in soil, casting shadow on predicting the response of soil to climate change. Iron oxide was suggested as an important mineral preserving soil organic carbon. However, ferric minerals a...
متن کاملThe application of Polyaluminium Ferric Chloride for Turbidity and Color Removal from Low to Medium Turbid Water
Background & Aims of the Study: Coagulation is an essential process for the removal of fine particulate matter in water treatment. Polyaluminium ferric chloride (PAFC) is a composite inorganic polymer of Aluminium and ferric salt. This study was conducted to find out the optimum coagulation conditions for the removal of turbidity, color and organic matter (UV absorbance) in low to mediu...
متن کاملEffect of aging on phosphorus speciation in surface deposit of a vertical flow constructed wetland.
This study was conducted to determine phosphorus (P) species captured in a vertical-flow constructed wetland (VFCW) system combining a trickling filter followed by FeCl3 injection for phosphate coagulation. Suspended solids (SS) thus formed accumulated over time at the VFCW surface and transformed into a sludge deposit layer, which was shown to concentrate most of the P captured in the system. ...
متن کاملMethanogens rapidly transition from methane production to iron reduction.
Methanogenesis, the microbial methane (CH4 ) production, is traditionally thought to anchor the mineralization of organic matter as the ultimate respiratory process in deep sediments, despite the presence of oxidized mineral phases, such as iron oxides. This process is carried out by archaea that have also been shown to be capable of reducing iron in high levels of electron donors such as hydro...
